Honolulu Marathon 2024 Guide: Tips and How to Enter

Who Can Enter the Honolulu Marathon?

Anyone and everyone aged seven and up. Whether you're a Hawaii local, a visitor from the mainland, or an international traveler, everyone is invited. This marathon is walker-friendly, too, with no time limit to cross the finish line.

 

How to Register for the 2024 Honolulu Marathon

To help make registration smooth, here’s a breakdown of options based on your location.

Hawaii Residents

  • Where to Register: Hawaii residents can register online here.
  • Discounts: Hawaii residents often receive discounted registration fees and early bird rates.
  • Required Documents: Proof of Hawaii residency may be required to access local rates.

U.S. Mainland & Canadian Residents

  • Registration Process: Register online via the official Honolulu Marathon website
  • Travel Planning Tips: Waikiki Resort Hotel, just steps from the start line, is convenient for runners and supporters alike. 

International Participants

  • Online Registration: International runners can also register online. Be sure to check for any visa or travel requirements for entering Hawaii from your country. Japanese entries need to take place here.
  • Arrival Tips: Arrive in Honolulu a few days before the marathon to adjust to the time zone and weather, which can be warm and humid in December.
  • Early Booking Promotions: If you book directly with Waikiki Resort Hotels 30+ days before your trip, you qualify for a 40% discount on your accommodation.

 U.S. Active Duty Military & Full-Time Students - Hawaii & Mainland USA Residents

  • Online Registration: Students and U.S. Active Duty Military can register online and receive a 20% discount. 
  • Required Documents: Student ID or Active Duty U.S. Military ID (for personnel or dependants) will be required before race packets are released. Runners must also state which part of the armed forces they are a member of when registering. 

 

Registration Fees

Honolulu Marathon registration fees vary based on where you're from and how close to race day you enter. Prices range from $185 - $400. Here’s a quick look at the typical structure:

  • Early Bird Registration (usually available through mid-summer): Lowest rates for early registrants.
  • Standard Registration (open until mid-fall): Slightly higher fees apply.
  • Late Registration (October to race day): Fees increase further as race day approaches.

Check the Honolulu Marathon website for the latest fee updates. Payment is accepted by credit card, and fees are non-refundable. The event allows you to split your payments using the ‘Pay monthly with Let’s Do This‘ option.

Late Registration In Person

If you're famous for last-minute plans, then you're in luck! Late registration for the marathon is available at the Honolulu Marathon Expo at the Hawaii Convention Center on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday before the 2024 race:

  • December 5th, 10:00 AM – 6 PM
  • December 6th, 9:00 AM – 7 PM
  • December 7th, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

 

Packet Pickup and Expo Information

Registered participants must pick up their race packets at the Honolulu Marathon Expo. Here’s what to expect:

  • Location: Hawai‘i Convention Center, about a 10-minute drive from the Waikiki Resort.
  • Expo Days: Generally held over three days before race day.
  • Pickup Requirements: Bring a photo I.D. to pick up your race bib, timing chip, and other essentials. No one can pick up your packet on your behalf.
  • Bib Number: Watch your emails for your Bib Number a week before the race. You will need to show this email (printed or on your device) to collect your packet.
  • Official Merchandise: Are you a fan of merchandise? Stalls with marathon merchandise will be available next to packet pickup stations.

 

Race Day Ready!

On race day, start your journey at Ala Moana Boulevard near the Waikiki Resort. The marathon kicks off at 5 a.m., with temperatures warming up as the day progresses—sunscreen is recommended. Hydrate at the many aid stations along the course. Prime viewing spots are along Ala Moana Boulevard and Diamond Head for spectators.

After crossing the finish line, collect your finisher certificate, unwind at the official after-party in Kapiolani Park, or relax on Waikiki Beach. Congratulations!
