What to Do for a Family Night Out in Oahu

Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, teens, or kids of any age in between, there’s plenty to do to keep the whole family occupied in Oahu. Hikingkayaking, and family-friendly races are popular daytime activities—but what about nighttime? If you’re looking for the best things to do in Waikiki at night, you’ve come to the right place.

Watch a Dive-In Movie

Of all the great things to do in Honolulu at night, one of the most unique activities is going to a dive-in movie—where you’ll watch a classic film while floating in a pool under the stars. Held at Wet’n’Wild Hawaii (a local water park), “Dive’n’Movie” nights are truly special. Films take place on a 20-inch high-definition LED TV wall screen, and there are prize giveaways, food and drink specials, and more.

Go Roller-Skating

Roller skating is a great activity for families to enjoy together in Oahu. Create lasting memories at Roller Skate Oahu. This popular skating rink has roller skates, inline skates, and anything else you might need for a night out skating. The rink even hosts regular skate events and meetups at various skate parks around Oahu. And if you’re in town for the Pacific Roller Derby, this is a fun (and free) event the whole family is bound to delight in; don’t miss it.

Visit the Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum is one of the top cultural museums in Hawaii, so it’s well worth a visit. The museum hosts a stargazing program called “The Stars Tonight” every third Friday of the month, which is a wonderful family-friendly event.

“After Hours” is another awesome nighttime event (held on the second Friday of every month)—there’s delicious food and drinks, games and activities for kids, and planetarium shows. Plus, the event includes public tours where guests can learn about the museum’s unique history and the fascinating cultures of Hawaii and the Pacific. (Pro-tip: Check the museum’s events calendar for other programs before you go.)

Attend a Traditional Luau Dinner

It’s not a trip to Hawaii without seeing a luau firsthand—featuring music and cultural performances, these lively feasts are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can attend luaus at various venues around Oahu, where you’ll dine on traditional delicacies like kalua pig and haupia, listen to live music, and watch hula performers.

Go Bowling

Bowling is another great go-to family-friendly activity for families with older children. Lucky Strike has four bowling lanes (including private lanes), plus an arcade, darts, a sports bar, and late-night snacks. Kids will have no trouble staying occupied for hours here, and adults will undoubtedly enjoy themselves, too.

Watch the Friday Night Fireworks

Every Friday night in Oahu, an incredible fireworks display takes place over Waikiki Beach. This event began in 1988 and remains a beloved tradition among locals and tourists alike. You can nab a spot on the sand for free. Or, book tickets to the Starlight Luau, which includes excellent vantage points to watch the fireworks, backdropped by the gorgeous Pacific.
